“On time travel in the Paderborner Land” – Walk on the trail of railway history – around Altenbeken.

Among railway enthusiasts Altenbeken at the gate to the Egge Mountains is renowned as a true jewel of railway history: An ever-increasing number of visitors from all over Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Great Britain come here to explore the town’s long-standing railway tradition.

Enjoy the special atmosphere around the mighty railway viaduct, the railway station, the railway line triangle, the “Rehberg” Tunnel and the 044 series museum steam engine in the centre of town. Each evening, when its high stone arches are splendidly illuminated, the viaduct is transformed into a spectacular work of art and light.

Keen railway photographers are excited by the impressive motifs they can capture from a viewing platform above the viaduct.

Combine this special railway atmosphere with a walk along the Viaduct Rambling Route. The 29 km walkway around Altenbeken offers a splendid experience of the history of railway and nature in its purest form. On their way across the very well maintained and well signposted route walkers can enjoy many magnificent views of the mighty railway viaduct – the largest stone railway bridge throughout Europe.
